I Am Legend: Review…

Man, I know lots of people out there are dissing this movie because, like many in the past, it isn’t true to the book…or short-story in this case. Seeing as how I never read that, I don’t have to worry about that scenario. I really liked this movie. I am a big fan of most movies that are post-apocalyptic types, but this one was especially cool. I really liked the whole look and feel of the movie. Also, I’m a big fan of dogs…so having the dog as his co-star worked well for me…hehehe. The subject matter of the movie is one that I think most of today’s generations can really relate to, since we get news everyday about how we’re facing one more threat that’s gonna ‘end the world’. Seeing the city of Manhattan being reclaimed by mother nature was an eerily cool effect.
Anyway, I don’t like to get into too much detail, since I’m a huge fan of watching a movie without too much info about it. How many movies have you seen that showed WAY too much information in the previews. I think that reviews can have the same effect. I’ll just say it’s cool and that should be all you need to motivate to go watch it…hehehe.

Mueck…Dope Sculptor…
Born in Melbourne,Australia, to parents who were toy makers, he labored on children’s television shows for 15 years before working in special effects for such films as Labyrinth, a 1986 fantasy epic starring David Bowie. Eventually Mueck concluded that photography pretty much destroys the physical presence of the original object, and so he turned to fine art and sculpture. In the early 1990′s, still in his advertising days, Mueck was commissioned to make something highly realistic, and was wondering what material would do the trick. Latex was the usual, but he wanted something harder, more precise. Luckily, he saw a little architectural decor on the wall of a boutique and inquired as to the nice, pink stuff’s nature. Fiberglass resin was the answer, and Mueck has made it his bronze and marble ever since.
*this was from an e-mail from my buddy. This artist was dope enough to have to share wit ya’ll.

Whopper Freakout Commercial…Kinda funny…
Some of this made it worth posting….plus it’s Friday, so funny works well with Fridays. The sad thing about these commercials is underlying commentary about how many people are consuming these fast-food gut-bombs (myself included, although I try to stay away most times). You think capitalism has any concerns for the people? Remember though, you are not you, you are your money.
Movie Review: Trade…

I was unlucky enough to get the flu, and so the only good that comes outta that is the time to sit down and do some serious movie watching. Especially since even when I’m sick I can’t sleep much during the day. Anyway, I watched this movie called ‘Trade’. This movie was a very limited release, so not many theaters showed it. Overall the movie was very good, although it’s quite a depressing ride. Basically this movie is about the buying and selling (trade) of human beings, mainly children. Like I said, it’s pretty depressing…but at the same time, I thought it was filmed, directed, and acted out very well. The movie projects that feeling of helplessness that these poor people are faced with each day. It also shows the lack of compasion and empathy the dealers in this business have for their ‘product’. The bottom section of the movie poster above is a screenshot of an especially troubling scene in the movie. While watching this, I tried to keep in mind it was ‘just a movie’, but the sad fact is that all the things portrayed go on in ‘real life’ everyday. Disgusting.
At the end of the movie there are some horrible statistics given about how many children worldwide are put into this world and how little governments worldwide are doing about it. Yet another completely dissapointing example of the greed of man.
So…be warned; it’s a good movie, but a sad eye-opener as well.

In The Studio With ‘Fully Fullwood’-A Reggae Legend…

Well folks….I just spent the day hanging out with a certified reggae legend. The Shockout.com radio crew were invited into Fully Fullwood’s studio, named ‘The Kitchen’, for a day of interviewing, filming, and taking a guided tour through the history of much of the foundation of reggae music. Fully was very friendly and made us feel welcome and at home from the get-go. Being a huge fan of reggae music for so long, I had heard the name Fully Fullwood, along with Soul Syndicate and The Fully Fullwood Band, but I will admit that my reggae trivia knowledge is pitiful compared to my reggae music collection. Over the course of the day I learned that there are so many riddims and basslines that many of us know by sound, but had/have no clue who was actually reponsible for what. Basically, Fully is an essential part of the creation and development of this music that so many people have come to love. He’s performed with so many well-known artists, that I’m not even going to attempt to try to list them here.
Some good news for reggae music lovers out there is that Fully is releasing a new album next month titled “Fully Loaded”. And to add to that good news is that Fully is about to leave to Europe to perform on the “Tosh Meets Marley” tour. More info including tour dates will be available shortly at Shockout.com, so keep checking there for that. This tour sounds like a combination of roots musicians and music that cannot be missed.
*The interview with Fully will also be available on Shockout very soon, along with videos of the same interviews. All this, plus a mix by Selectah Sandman to acompany and showcase Fully’s material.
**UPDATE: The interview and videos are now available at Shockout.com
*Checkout more info at Fully’s website*
On a side note: His studio is definitely something that any music/electronics junkie would love to have. I was checking out the whole setup and it made my home super-computer seem lame…heheheh.
Joe Higgs-Life Of Contradiction (re-issue)…

I just got the opportunity to check out the reissue of a reggae classic by Joe Higgs called Life Of Contradiction. This is definitely a great addition to any reggae collection, especially if you are a fan of that 70′s roots sound. An added bonus of this reissue is that the CD version includes two bonus tracks not originally included on the 1975 release. Those tracks are “Let Us Do Something” (a personal favorite on this) and “Freedom Journey”. I guess the reissue of the vinly LP will not include those tracks, which, to me, seems more than a little lame; seeing as how the people that are going to pick this up on vinyl are most definitely the more ‘hardcore’ music collectors (imo). Speaking of hardcore collectors; I’ve noticed that many reggae fans that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, both online and off, don’t have much Joe Higgs. Hopefully this re-release will give a lot of you the opportunity to give a listen.
Anyway, you can look for this in stores on February 18th. This is on the Presure Sounds label.
peace, enjoy the music,
