Cultural Roots: Hell A Go Pop Re-Issue…

I’ve been meaning to post this up for a while now but disk golf, computer issues, and some other stuff keep getting priority. So, without further ado: This album from Cultural Roots called ‘Hell A Go Pop’ was released on CD for the first time in 2007. I know that was a while ago, but I also know that there are plenty of people that don’t catch everything that drops and so here’s the heads up. This was originally released in 1983 on vinyl by Greensleeves. My guess is that most peeps never got that wax and so this CD version will give a wider audience the opportunity to check it out. This is a pretty rootsy album that will remind you of that mellow reggae music we all love. Although this isn’t the strongest roots reggae album, it should be a welcome addition to any fan of the genre.
I couldn’t find any tracks off the album to let you preview, so here’s one off of one of their 12″ to let you get the idea. This track is called “Drift Away From Evil”.
Peace, enjoy,

Largest Personal Archive!…

Due to a crazy malfunction on my server…a LOT of my data was lost. When I tried to recover it, I got a heap of randomly numbered folders, each with various bits of data. When I right-clicked to see what the size of it all was…this is what it showed. It took about 20 minutes to finish…hehehe. Anyone else seen a Petabyte before?

What Would Jesus Buy?…

Last night turned out to be a documentary night and the movie of choice was “What Would Jesus Buy?”. I think this is another movie that most Americans should probably be ‘forced’ to watch as its’ message is something that many people need to hear. The movie is mostly about the traveling entertainment group called “The Church Of Stop Shopping” that is headed by Reverand Billy. The troop travels from ‘supermall’ to ‘supermall’ across the country in an effort to spread the message that America and Americans are digging themselves into a rediculous debt in a winless effort to attain ‘all that is material.’ This is mostly targeted at the fiasco that Christmas has become…where people go ‘nuts’ and into debt to buy as much as possible to support this corporate designed holiday.
In my opinion, the biography aspect of the Stop Shopping Church gets a little old and I’d of been fine had they cut about half an hour of their exploits out of the film. But, overall, the message is very good and, like I said earlier, I think this movie would be good for a lot of people out there. Also, I’d like to say that I’m glad someone is actually saying and doing something about this, even if they are a bit ‘nuts’….hehehe. As usual, I’m not gonna talk too much about the flick, I just type up a little something and recommend it to the rest of you.
Here’s a little writeup about the ‘church’ from the movies’ site:
Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir believe that Consumerism is overwhelming our lives. The corporations want us to have experiences only through their products. Our neighborhoods, “commons” places like stoops and parks and streets and libraries, are disappearing into the corporatized world of big boxes and chain stores. But if we “back away from the product” – even a little bit, well then we Put The Odd Back In God!
So we are singing and preaching for local economies and real ā not mediated through products ā experience. We like independent shops where you know the person behind the counter or at the very least, you like them enough to share a story.

Junior Kelly “Greatest Hits” 2008…

I’m sure that for most reggae listeners, the name Junior Kelly is far from a new one. And for those true collectors out there, you’ll know that this isn’t the first ‘Best Of’ compilation of his that’s been put out either….but since it’s a 2008 release and it’s got some great tracks on it, I figured I’d post it up. The first track on this titled ‘Bless’ is a banger. Anyone with a decent soundsystem will apprecialove bumpin this one. Another track I’ve always dug is ‘Watchin You’. A track that Junior Kelly fans would most likely agree is trademark Junior Kelly sound. One more that is a stand out dope track is ‘Africa Bound’…
‘Please Remember’ ‘Rasta-Face-Base-Waist’, ‘Corner Man’, and ‘Eye Beam’ could have all been left off the tracklist as far as I’m concerned. Overall this is a cool compilation with some really good tracks, but in todays’ world with digital options, I recommend buying only the worthwhile tracks and not purchasing the entire CD.
*Here’s that track ‘Bless’..but remember, the ‘real deal’ sounds much better!
Reggae: Tarrus Riley “Back Biter”…
I’ve been kinda laggin on the reggae music review/recommendations lately, so here’s a cool, lesser known artist that’s definitely worth checkin out. Tarrus Riley (often mispelled as ‘Taurus Riley’) isn’t a household name yet, but if he keeps making tracks like “Parables” off his last album of the same name, I’ll be looking forward to hearing and seeing more of him. Anyway, check out this ‘new’ (not brand new, but…) tune and support this dude.
