Movie: Fanboys…
I’ve had this movie for quite a while and had neglected to watch it, thinking that it was going to be one of those flicks that’s so corny it’s hard to watch. Well, the time finally came to cozy up with a nice cold six-pack of Red Hook IPA (Longhammer) and see what this movie had to offer.
The good news is that this flick was a pleasant surprise. I expected it to have the ultra-low budget feel to it, but it didn’t at all. It was more along the lines of any of recent years’ enjoyable comedy releases. The concept is pretty simple: These nerds decide to break in to Lucas Ranch to steal a pre-release copy of Episode I (Star Wars). With that in mind, it’s probably a good idea for folks that dislike Star Wars (I’ve heard they exist), to stear clear of this one. Although it might still be fun to watch since there are plenty of space/comic nerd stereotypes to laugh at.
I think the biggest surprise in this movie was the amount of cameos and the familiar names of those actors. You can expect to see dudes like Billy Dee Williams, William Shatner, and Seth Rogen to name a few of the most popular or well known. Basically, this movie delivers what it is supposed to: laughs. I’m not going to say anything stupid like ‘funniest move ever!’ or ‘breaks new ground in comedic cinema’, but the shit is funny. Judging from some things I read online, by people that write reviews of comedies, there seems to be a tendency to over analyze the movies or maybe expect every comedy to HAVE to be groundbreaking and/or the best ever. I on the other hand, go into a comedy with a beer in hand and turn off my analytical brain in favor of allowing movies to be corny, unrealistic, far-fetched, etc. …or as I like to say ‘creative’. Turn your creative brain on, and leave that math shit to real life. Now go grab that beer and watch this shit. Oh…and please feel free to smoke em’ if you got em’. There’s a radical trip scene in this that definitely deserves noting.
