One Week (Joshua Jackson) Movie Poster
After an awesome vacation weekend, I sat down to check out this movie called “One Week” last night. This movie isn’t any kind of blockbuster (obviously, since you’ve never heard of it until now), and it wasn’t advertised with a massive budget. It was first released in 2008 as a festival film up in Canada. After solid crowd reactions, it went on to a wider release in Canada, followed by a limited release in the USA, until finally being released on DVD (USA) in June of 2009.
The movie is definitely worth checking out, in my opinion. It’s one of those flicks that might just go unnoticed, but not because of any plot flaws or bad acting/directing. When a movie gets almost no advertising budget, most folks just don’t even know it exists. Plus, the cover of this one isn’t exactly raging eye-candy that demands inspection. The movie itself tackles a subject that most of us choose to ignore, for the most part, and isn’t easy to deal with even when it’s forced upon us: death. Even though the movie deals with death, it isn’t entirely dark or depressing…although there are plenty of events depicted and talked about that elicit an emotional response. This movie manages to take you on a ride through all kinds of emotions though, and, for me, provide plenty of food for thought as well. The movies pace and awesome narration reminded me a little of ‘Forest Gump.’ I say that for several reasons, but one is the mix of serious topics, humor, and emotion. I’m not saying they’re equal, but I saw similarities.
One little side benefit I found in this movie was some of the gorgeous nature shots filmed throughout Canada. This movie makes me want to visit again, and definitely see as much of the Canadian wildlife as possible.
A great quote from the movie’s narrator (Campbell Scott): When you get those rare moments of clarity, those flashes when the universe makes sense, you try desperately to hold on to them. They are the life boats for the darker times, when the vastness of it all, the incomprehensible nature of life is completely illusive. So the question becomes, or should have been all a long… What would you do if you knew you only had one day, or one week, or one month to live. What life boat would you grab on to? What secret would you tell? What band would you see? What person would you declare your love to? What wish would you fulfil? What exotic locale would you fly to for coffee? What book would you write?
A short summary: Ben Tyler (Joshua Jackson) has been diagnosed with cancer. With a grim chance of survival in the best case scenario even if he immediately begins treatment, he instead decides to take a motorcycle trip from Toronto through the Canadian prairies to British Columbia. Along the way, he makes new friends, reevaluates his relationship with his fiancée Samantha (played by Liane Balaban), his job, and his dream of becoming a writer, and, after suffering some near-death experiences, learns to appreciate life.
