So, the other day I went to the Stone Brewery in Escondido, CA. I’ve been wanting to go for quite a while now and thankfully, it’s been accomplished.
First of all the brewery and grounds are really incredible. They have spared no expense creating a little oasis in the hills of Escondido. There are tons of rock formations, flowering trees and bushes, greenery, and even a waterfall and pond in their garden walk area. This is one of the best spots to enjoy a beer that I’ve been to. It’s just set up really nice and is such a serene setting. Luckily the weather was perfect and so my afternoon, waiting for the tour to start, beer was especially enjoyable.
Basically all the areas within the building are really nice too. The restaurant has super high ceilings and koi pond. Plus the bamboo trees and asian style decor make for a really comfortable feeling room. And since the name of the brewery is ‘stone’, they made sure to include all sorts of giant stone slaps to embelish different areas…including the bathrooms. Speakin of the bathrooms, it’s weird that this place had such a nicely decorated bathroom, waterless urinals, etc….but they set up the pissers so that you gotta touch elbows with your peein neighbors and no dividers. It trips me out that anyone would set a pisser area up like that. This isn’t the old West anymore…we can enjoy keeping our wieners to ourselves with a little privacy. :O
Ok…on the the rest of the spot. I advise taking the tour if you get the chance to visit this brewery. The tour was totally worth going on, lots of cool facts were given, and, best of all, there is a nice long tasting with free pours at the end. Overall, the tour gets a big thumbs up.
On to the food. I gotta say that with all the amazing presentation of the Stone Brewery, the food didn’t hold up. First of all, having eaten at the Sierra Nevada Brewery more than a couple of times, I would much rather eat up North than at Stone. Part of the reason is that the food at Stone was really over-priced. And if they are going to charge those prices, I think the level of food needs to be raised a bit. It’s like they wanted to make their restaurant compete with ‘The Ritz’s’ prices and looks, without the taste and value you actually get at The Ritz. The food is not bad. It’s actually good, but I think it’s over-priced for what you get. I joked that it’s possible that their pricing is to help recover the MASSIVE amount of money they spent making the place look so cool.
Overall I had a great day visiting the place, and am looking forward to visiting again. Next time I think I’ll stick to beer and appetizers though.
