Well reggae fans, Jah Mason dropped a new album in 2010 called “Hold Ya Head Up.” I gotta say, I was pretty stoked to hear that he had released a new album, although I didn’t have the highest of expectations due to some of the recent tunes I’d heard from him. What sucks about that is I remember back in the 1990’s, Jah Mason was a personal favorite, along with Anthony B and Sizzla. Sadly, it seems that times changed for the worse and my favorite conscious dancehall acts were putting out weaker and weaker albums.
Anyway, back to “Hold Ya Head Up.” The album is not what I’d call a ‘banger’, but it’s got some notable tracks, including “Mama”, “Wings of Wind”, and Beautiful World. These three tracks were standouts to me, with a nice rolling bass line, the usual positive lyrics, and good delivery. As a whole, the album isn’t Jah Mason’s best work, but like I said, it has some notable tracks. My biggest complaint is that many of the tracks aren’t necessarily bad, but just don’t stand out much at all.
While I’m not recommending going out and buying the whole album, I do recommend giving it a listen (you can start with “Wings of Wind” below)…then purchase the three tracks I mentioned.
It’s good to see Jah Mason with new material, and I’m still waiting for him to recapture his 1990’s dynamic. I guess we’ll all have to wait and see.
