What Would Jesus Buy?…

what would jesus buy
Last night turned out to be a documentary night and the movie of choice was “What Would Jesus Buy?”. I think this is another movie that most Americans should probably be ‘forced’ to watch as its’ message is something that many people need to hear. The movie is mostly about the traveling entertainment group called “The Church Of Stop Shopping” that is headed by Reverand Billy. The troop travels from ’supermall’ to ’supermall’ across the country in an effort to spread the message that America and Americans are digging themselves into a rediculous debt in a winless effort to attain ‘all that is material.’ This is mostly targeted at the fiasco that Christmas has become…where people go ‘nuts’ and into debt to buy as much as possible to support this corporate designed holiday.
In my opinion, the biography aspect of the Stop Shopping Church gets a little old and I’d of been fine had they cut about half an hour of their exploits out of the film. But, overall, the message is very good and, like I said earlier, I think this movie would be good for a lot of people out there. Also, I’d like to say that I’m glad someone is actually saying and doing something about this, even if they are a bit ‘nuts’….hehehe. As usual, I’m not gonna talk too much about the flick, I just type up a little something and recommend it to the rest of you.

Here’s a little writeup about the ‘church’ from the movies’ site:
Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir believe that Consumerism is overwhelming our lives. The corporations want us to have experiences only through their products. Our neighborhoods, “commons” places like stoops and parks and streets and libraries, are disappearing into the corporatized world of big boxes and chain stores. But if we “back away from the product” - even a little bit, well then we Put The Odd Back In God!

So we are singing and preaching for local economies and real — not mediated through products — experience. We like independent shops where you know the person behind the counter or at the very least, you like them enough to share a story.

Peace, enjoy the movie, get your learn on…

Tavis Smiley-Conversation With Phil Donahue…

June 02nd, 2008 | Category: Movies, Uncategorized

I admit that Tavis isn’t my favorite interviewer (I can’t understand how the dude is one of PBS’s head interviewers. He seems to have an abrasive personality and an unpleasantly quick spitted question style in my opinion), but he does have some really great guests on his show. Sadly, most people don’t know that PBS provides the great programming that it does (I admit that I didn’t either, until I moved and neglected to re-subscribe to cable [one of the best things I’ve done in recent history] four years ago). Anyway, opinions don’t seem to change peoples’ minds, but I like to voice anyway. There’s always that chance….

Buju And Junior Reid Fight(?) @ ‘Best Of The Best’ Show In Miami…

May 29th, 2008 | Category: Movies, Reggae

buju banton junior reidIt was not a pleasant sight for onlookers who witnessed a confrontation between Buju Banton and Junior Reid at the Best of the Best show held in Miami on Sunday, May 25.

Both entertainers and their respective management teams are tight-lipped about the backstage confrontation.

When contacted, Jarrett, a member of Junior Reid’s management team said, “I cannot confirm anything about anything.” He said he would first have to speak with Mr Reid. However, when THE STAR called back, his phone rang without an answer.

In the meantime, eyewitnesses have leaked their versions of what they say transpired.

According to one source, it seemed as if the two (Buju Banton and Junior Reid) had been carrying some ill feelings from before.

Different version

Both Junior Reid and Buju Banton were backstage when Buju apparently tried to ‘hail’ Reid. Reid, however, shrugged Buju off, saying, “mi nuh want nuh hail from nuh byman…Buju yuh a hypocrite.”

It was at this point that they got into a tussle and a crowd converged to keep the two apart.

However, another source who was also at the event, gave a slightly different version.

“Dem (Buju and Reid) did a argue literally, is like dem start throw word an di whole ting cause a big confrontation, but it neva get too physical,” the source said.

“Is like afta di whole ting Buju start pull him button dem, cause him shirt did button up to him neck, an is like him did a try fi relax and regain him composure,” the source who was a patron at the event said.

When contacted, Joey Budefuco, promoter of the Best of the Best show said he was not aware of any incident backstage involving Junior Reid and Buju Banton.

The Best of the Best show also featured Beenie Man, Sizzla and Assassin.

Well, for me this personally just solidifies the opinion of Junior Reid that I had developed after he went on that quest for MTV fame a few months back. I mean, this dude claims he’s Mr. “One Blood” and yet his most recent song activity is pairing with some of MTV’s weakest lyrical ’sensations’. If Junior Reid had any conscience, I think he’d stick to the high road and steer clear of the “just-add-water” rappers that MTV so proudly promotes. If I was gonna say I’m Rasta, I’d be sure to keep my musical pairing with singers/rappers/MC’s that spoke of positivity, unity, and things that go along with the Rasta faith.
Anyway…a bit of a rant bout Junior Reid, but shit…who’s he to call Buju a hypocrite? Junior Reid’s got one good song on his roster that he wrote 15 years ago. Maybe he should worry bout making ‘good’ music again.

peace,
